Keterians Win the Championship in 8th Sri Lanka Army Inter Regiment Taekwondo Championship

The 8th Inter Regiment Taekwondo championship of the Sri Lanka Army that concluded in Jaffna on 7th June 2010 saw the Gajaba Regiment emerge victorious displaying best performance throughout.

Preliminary rounds were held on 3rd and 4th June instant at Security Forces Headquarters - Jaffna (SF - J) gymnasium before qualified players from various Regiments vied for the cup at Jaffna Hindu College auditorium on Monday (07).

The event started with the arrival of the Chief Guest, Commander SF (J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe who was received by Brigadier General Staff SF (J) and Chairman Sri Lanka Army Taekwondo Association Brigadier B.C.J.A.F. Rodrigo.

Championship was conducted in eight weight classes, Fin, Fly, Bantam, Feather, Welter, Light, Middle and Heavy. Winners in each weight class were awarded with bronze, silver and gold medals.

Considering overall aggregate, Gajaba Regiment was adjudged the Champion while the award for the runner up was shared by Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) and Sri Lanka Army Service Corps (SLASC). They received their awards from the Chief Guest.

Meanwhile, Private Wijerathne C.G.S. of SLSR won the medal for the best player in novicesí category. Gold medals for the best players in menís and womenís category were respectively secured by Lance Corporal Perera A.W.I of SLSR and Private Gayani P.G.S. of 2 (Volunteer) Sri Lanka Army Womenís Corps (SLAWC). 2(V) SLAWC became the winner in the womenís category defeating 5 (V) SLAWC, the runner up.

Special feature at the award ceremony was that out of around 60 trainees of Jaffna Tamil youth who were trained by Sri Lanka Army Taekwondo training instructors twelve received their 1st belt from the SFJ Commander. It was the first batch of Jaffna Youth trained by the Sri Lanka Army under its Civil-Military Coordinating Affairs launched on a concept of Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe.

Organizing the 8th Inter Regiment Taekwondo Championship in Jaffna is expected to be the catalyst to spread the sport in the peninsula.
