Jaffna Tamil - Sinhala "Vesak Gee" Reverberate Colombo Air
[Updated :: 2010-06-06 16:58:49 Hours]

The State-sponsored national Veask Celebration in Colombo was made more attractive on Saturday (05.06.2010) evening with recitation of Sinhala and Tamil Buddhist devotional songs by a section of students and teachers of Jaffna together with a few Army soldiers, for the first time in recent Sri Lankan history.

Arrangements for their Colombo tour that signified national harmony were made by Commander Security Forces-Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe on special invitation of the organizing committee.

The same devotional songs sung for the first time at Duraiappa Stadium during SF (J) - organized "Yapa Patunai Daham Amavai" grand Vesak festival earned big acclamation and island wide publicity through mass media and swelling audience due to its novel and innovative form.

Saturday's performance in Colombo also provided a golden opportunity for southerners, who missed watching proper " Yapa Patunai Daham Amavai " in Jaffna, to get an idea of the effort by Jaffna-based Security Forces to espouse the national harmony.

Chairman Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation Mr. Hudson Samarasinghe, Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe and some distinguished guests comprised the Colombo audience Saturday evening as invitees.

The event was telecast by Rupavahini and Eye channels of Sri Lanka Ruphavahini Corporation the same evening.
