Army Donates more Cattle to Poor Families in Jaffna

Ten cows including one calf saved from being slaughtered in the South were handed over to eight low income families in Manippay by the Commander Security Forces – Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe on the Vesak Full Moon day (24) during a function held at Marathadypullayar temple.
One cow was donated to the Marathady pullayar temple while others were given to Mr. K. Sorupan of Vaddukkoddai, Mr. R. Rjasekaran of Chullipuram, Mr. M. Mahinthan of Navali North, V. Ragurupan of Annaikottai, Mr. B. Subaskaran of Uduvil West, Mr. G. Sivakumar of Kokuvil, Mr. T. Thanabalasingham of Santhilippay and Mrs. R.Kanakeshvari of Chunnakam. “Yapa Patunai Daham Amavai” Grand Vesak Festival in Full Swing in Jaffna

“Yapa Patunai Daham Amavai”, the grand Vesak Festival annually organized by the Security Forces Headquarters – Jaffna (SF-J) commenced on the Vesak Full Moon day (24) for the fourth consecutive time in Jaffna city centre. On the first day of this fabulous celebration, organized by the Army with view to ushering sustainable peace to the island through religious harmony, nearly 20000 people including visitors from the South thronged the Vesak Zone created in the area around Jaffna Public Library. Attractive Vesak lanterns, large models of the Heaven and a horror house and many other beautiful creations made by Jaffna soldiers are on display for three days. 20 SLNG Helps Uthayatharakai Pre-School

Uthayatharakai pre school of Iththavil in 551 Brigade area and its kids recieved a stock of furniture and school items as a donation from the soldiers of 20th Sri Lanka National Guard (20 SLNG) serving in Pallai. Wooden desks, tables and chairs made by 20 SLNG soldiers and plastic chairs, school bags and water bottles bought with their financial contribution were handed over to Uthayatharakai pre school on 21st May with participation of General Officer Commanding 55 Division Brigadier Ajith Wijesinghe, Commander 551 Brigade Colonel S.M.S.P.B. Samarakoon and Commanding Officer 20 SLNG Major H.M.A. Pushpa Kumara.

2000 Soldiers Observe Sil in Jaffna

Soldiers serving in Jaffna took a time off from their hectic days to concern on spiritual satisfaction engaging in religious activities after observing Sil on Wednesday (23). Jaffna Commander Enlightens UN Officials on Valikamam North Land Issue

Commander Security Forces – Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe on Tuesday (21) clarified the reality of the issue on taking over lands in Valikamam North to top officials of United Nations Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Ms Agnes Asekenye – Oonyu, Head of Office and Mr. Mark Prasopa – Plaizier, Deputy Head of Office. Army Undertakes Reconstruction of Iyakkachchi – Kaddaikadu Road

Reconstruction of dilapidated Iyakkachchi – Kaddaikadu road which caused many inconvenience to road users has now been undertaken by the Sri Lanka Army. Condition of the road turned from bad to worse when occasional rains washed its edges and granites away making it unmotorable. The matter was brought to the notice of the Road Development Authority (RDA) which postponed it claiming that allocation of funds gets delayed. Later, on directives of the Commander Security Forces – Jaffna Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Commander 55 Division Brigadier Ajith Wijesinghe employed the soldiers of his Division and machineries provided by the 10 Field Engineer Regiment of Kankesanthurai and commenced reconstruction work on 10th May for the convenience of people who daily use this road.

Army Assist Cyclone-Affected Families: Reconstruct Destroyed Houses & Provide Meals

A team of soldiers of the 14th Gemunu Watch (14 GW) was immediately rushed to Gonapuram in Mallakam to assist the families affected due to the adverse weather condition that swept across the peninsula Monday (13) morning. Four houses were completely destroyed and eleven more were pertly damaged due to the cyclone and heavy rain.
Seventy four members of fifteen families of Gonapuram were affected while one 17 year old girl and two boys of 14 and 19, who were inside the houses at the time that Palmyra trees fell on the houses, were admitted to Thelippalai and Jaffna hospitals with minor injuries. German Ambassador Briefed on Army’s Role in Post-War Jaffna

Another Dental Clinic Organized by 521 Brigade Held at Hartley College

One more workshop on oral hygiene and a dental clinic organized by the 521 Brigade for schoolchildren was held on 07th May at Hartley College Point Pedro. In support of Civil-Military Coordination (CIMIC) projects to improve health and sanitation of students of Jaffna, this programme was organized with coordination of Manthikai hospital and Mobile Dental Service Unit.
Out of over 325 students, 47 were given treatments for their dental problems during the clinic by the team of doctors. Dental Clinic Organized at Methodist Girls’ High School

A dental clinic and an awareness lecture on oral hygiene were conducted by the 521 Brigade for students of Point Pedro Methodist Girls’ High School on 30th April 2013 at the college.
The lecture conducted by specialists was attended by about 900 students with their teachers and 382 students attended the clinic. Removal and filling of bad teeth were done for more than 25 students. 18 GW Soldiers Provide Facilities to Navatkuly Kali Amman Kovil Devotees

Annual Pooja of this temple falls in March or April and draws a large crowd of devotees daily to make offerings to Kali Amman. St. Anthony’s players of Pasiyur trounced the Gurunagar Pathumins at football finals played on 20th April at Nelliady Central College ground and won a prize of Rs. 50000/=. New Bus Service from Kovilvayal to Jaffna Commences

Sri Lanka Army is playing a prime role in providing infrastructure to civilians in newly resettled villages in Jaffna with coordination of government institutes and other donor agencies. Especially the 55 Division of Kaddaikadu is looking into needs of civilians since they are still in need of development in many spheres. To facilitate transportation of schoolchildren and others travelling to Jaffna on various requirements, the 55 Division made arrangements to provide a daily bus service from Kovilvayal to Jaffna with coordination of the Jaffna Depot of Sri Lanka Transport (SLTB). The new bus service started on 22nd April ceremoniously with participation of senior officers of the Army and the Northern Province SLTB, schoolchildren and villagers.

513 Brigade Organizes New Year Festival at Sittnakerny

Security Forces – Jaffna (SF-J) this year too organized New Year festivals for civilians at Division and Brigade level on directives of the Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurudinghe. According to this programme, the 513 Brigade at Uduvil organized a New Year festival at Sittankerny Vaddu Hindu College on 21st April from 8.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. Bicycle race and crowning of the New Year Princess were the most attractive events of the day. Out of 40 cyclists, N. Thinestan won the first prize of the cycle race and A. Anushiya was crowned the New Year Princess.

A new house constructed by the Security Forces – Jaffna (SF-J) for Miss Yasodara Balasingham, working at the “Yarl FM” of Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, was handed over to her family by the Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe on Wednesday (17).
Responding to a request made by Yasodara, who has closely been working with the Army as an announcer cum translator at Army-organized functions in the peninsula, 11th Sri Lanka Light Infantry (11SLLI) serving under the 51 Division built the house worth over Rs. 900,000/= for her family on directives of the Commander SF-J. 553 Brigade Celebrates New Year with Veththilaikerny Civilians

552 Brigade Organizes First New Year Festival at Iyakkachchi

As all Hindus in the Jaffna peninsula are now getting ready to celebrate the Sinhala and Hindu New Year, the first new year festival in Jaffna was organized by the 552 Brigade for civilians at Iyakkachchi on 07th April at Iyakkachchi public ground. A range of Sinhala and Hindu traditional sports had been organized for civilians of all ages and weaving cajans, passing eggs, sack race, breaking pots, tug-of-war and climbing greasy pole were among them. Winners were awarded with valuable prizes by the Army and General Officer Commanding 55 Division Brigadier Ajith Wijesinghe and invited guests gave away prizes.

“Army – Asiri Heart Care Programme” Conducts One more Mobile Clinic

Another medical camp to identify heart patients in Jaffna and to refer them for further treatment was organized by the 511 Brigade at Atchuvely Central College on 31st March. A medical team from Asiri Heart Care Centre, Colombo arrived from Colombo at invitation of the Commander 511 Brigade Colonel Wijendra Gunathilake to conduct the clinic. Another session of Development Committee Meeting of the 55 Division was held at the Division Headquarters at Kaddaikadu on 28th March 2013. General Officer Commanding (GOC) 55 Division Brigadier Ajith Wijesinghe chaired the meeting attended by officials from Civil Administration, health, Education, fisheries and agricultural sectors. Chinese Vice Minister Extols Army Role in Post-War Jaffna

special Chinese high ranking political delegation on a visit to Jaffna on Wednesday (03) commended the Army’s role in post-conflict Jaffna and appreciated the fast development taking place in Jaffna. Avarankal Civilians Get United against Diaspora’s False Propaganda

A group of opportunists, self claimed as members of a London-based organization named “Avarangal Onriam”, who tried to provoke the residents in Avarankal in Jaffna against the Security Forces and the government, was chased away by the people in the area on 26th March evening.
They had planned to sell a book titled “20th Century History SivathalamAvarankal” written by a retired principal of a leading school in Jaffna District who is presently living in the UK. The campaign had been arranged by the organizers in front of the Sivashakthi Mani Mandapam at Avarankal. Army Donates another House to a Poor Family in Maruthankerny

A family of nine which did not have a permanent shelter to live in was donated a new house by the 10th Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (10 VIR) serving at Nagar Kovil. Mr. Subramanium’s Dream of a permanent house for his family became a reality when the Army offered him the new house, built by the 10 VIR soldiers, on 25th March. Construction of the house for Mr. Subramanium commenced after he reached the Commanding Officer of 10 VIR Major JSU Sathursinghe for assistance to build a house for his family. Troops of the Headquarters 55 Division and the 2nd Battalion Sri Lanka Light Infantry (2 SLLI) made a donation of school items for students of Kaddaikadu Roman Catholic Tamil Mixed (RCTM) school and a stock of other necessary equipment to the school.
A ceremony to hand over the donation including schoolbags, books and shoes to students and water filters, sports items and musical instruments to the school, was held on Friday (22) afternoon at RCTM school. Annual Pooja of Usan Murugan Temple Held

Annual Pooja of the Sri Murugan Temple at Usan, one of the most significant Hindu temples in Jaffna, was held on 17th March. Religious rituals were conducted by the chief priest of the temple Srilasri Kanthasamy kurukkal. Hundreds of Hindu devotees in the area attended the annual festival. Blood Donation Camp Held at PPD

Point Pedro Students Attend 521 Brigade Organized Dental Clinic

The first course of the programme which lasted for two weeks ended on 22nd February with award of certificates to all who successfully completred the course. Annual Feast of Kachchatheevu St. Anthony’s Church Held

Annual feast of St. Anthony’s Church at Kachchatheevu where many thousands from India and Sri Lanka gather every year was held this year too in high profile on Sunday (24). The Sunday Mass was attended over 6000 Indians and Sri Lankans of catholic faith to pray for peace and prosperity. Bishop Jaffna Rev. Fr. Dr. Thomas Sauntharanayagam and priests from India conducted the main prayers. The annual feast at Kachchatheevu symbolizes peace and friendship prevailing between Sri Lanka and India. Pilgrims from both countries spend days together in this small and isolated island attending prayers. As in early years Sri Lanka Navy had arranged all facilities for pilgrims who stayed overnight to attend the festival. 521 Brigade Organizes a Dental Clinic for Nelliady Students

About 179 schoolchildren in Nelliady area attended a mobile dental clinic and received treatment and medical advices on dental and oral hygiene during a medical camp organized by the 521 Brigade at Nelliady Central College on 12th February. Out of 179 students who attended the clinic, 41 had their bad teeth either removed or filled by dental surgeons who conducted the clinic. Many others were referred to dental clinics of Manthikai and Karaveddy hospitals. An awareness lecture on the subject was also conducted by the dental surgeons. 55 Division Distributes 52 Goats among Kevil Families

Sprinkler Irrigation System Successfully Experimented in Palaly Army Farm

A time saving and economical irrigation system was successfully experimented at the Army farm run by Security Forces Headquarters (SF-J) in Palaly. The new irrigation system which sprinkles water on cultivation has proved to be advantageous in many ways. In the first place it requires lesser human labour. It also minimizes water wastage since required amount of water is equally sprayed on plants without unnecessarily flooding the field. It prevents the damages caused to crops by moving of water carrying hoses all over the field. In this Sprinkler Irrigation system, water is pumped to the field in a tube and sprayed on cultivation through sprinklers wetting the plants and their roots to required level. Presently the system is successfully used to water red onion cultivation in an extent of 3 acres in the farm. The system was developed here.

55 Division Brings Delight of Christmas to Vadamaratchi

With blessing of Catholic priests in the area, Headquarters 55 Division assisted by soldiers serving in neighbouring Units put up a beautiful cow-shed symbolizing the birth of Prince of Peace. Meanwhile, small children gathered in the location had a fun dancing with soldiers of the 55 Division in attire of Santa Clause who gave away Christmas gifts to children. A large number of civilians in spite of the prevailing unfavorable whether condition gathered to venues.

55 Division Celebrates 16th Anniversary

The 55 Division based at Veththilaikerny celebrated its 16th birthday with a series of religious, social and military activities conducted at various locations last week.
Apart from formal military functions, the Division Headquarters had organized community welfare projects for civilians in the area. On 15th December, officers and other ranks serving under the 55 Division donated blood to Jaffna Teaching Hospital blood bank for patients waiting to undergo surgeries. Nearly 250 soldiers gave blood during the one day blood donation camp. At the same time, the Division Headquarters had made arrangements to donate school bags, books and shoes for 49 students studying at Kevil Government Tamil Mixed school on 17th December. A Pirith chanting ceremony, a guard of honour accorded to the General Officer Commanding and all ranks get-together.................
