The main military formation
in the Jaffna Peninsula has its hub at Palaly in close proximity to the
air-strip.Over 35,000 troops are under its command and is drawn from troop
levels that constitute the 51st,52nd,55th Divisions and several other
Task Force personnel attached to this station.
The peace and tranquility once enjoyed by all ethnic groups
in Sri Lanka ,broken by three decades of civil strife ,have now returned
consequent to the successful campaign by the Government of Sri Lanka's
(GOSL) security forces in liberating the people from the grip of terror
that pervaded the whole Island and in particular those living in the Wanni
and the Jaffna Peninsula. The fear and uncertainty in the daily lives
of people, the agonies of gun fire, the absence of parental care for little
children and the loss of lives on both sides of the warring divide have
now ceased.
In a return to reconciliation, civilian life and in expediting
the restoration of the traditional economic activities of the war affected
populace, the military is now engaged in this transformational stage.
A milestone was recently marked by the recent opening of a Civil Affairs
and Public Relations Office in the city centre of Jaffna Town. It is now
open to the public and the military personnel manning the office seek
to aid by acting as a channel in obtaining institutional access for those
in need of assistance and relief in many spheres.
